Pottery

Door County potter Brian Fitzgerald creates functional stoneware, woodfired pottery and decorative raku ware.

Raku

The technique used in making raku ware originated in 16th century Japan. Decorated with low-fire glazes, raku ware is quickly heated to red hot temperature in the kiln. The vessels are then quickly removed from the kiln and placed into a canister of combustibles such as dried leaves, wood shavings or paper. This material catches on fire causing variations in the glazes on the vessels. Due to the firing technique, raku pottery is for decorative use only.
